Nonconservative behavior of Br/Cl ratios during alteration of volcaniclastic sediments

چکیده

Other than halite diagenesis and organic matter degradation, Cl and Br are considered to be conservative in marine pore fluids. Consequently, Br/Cl ratios should remain constant during most diagenetic reactions. Nonetheless, Br/Cl molar ratios decrease to 1.27 3 10 ('18% less than seawater value) in pore fluids from Site 833 in the Aoba Basin of the New Hebrides convergent margin despite the lack of halite diagenesis and little organic matter. Sediment at this site is largely volcanic ash, which becomes hydrated with depth as it converts to clay and zeolite minerals. These hydration reactions remove sufficient water to increase the concentrations of most solutes including Cl and Br. The resulting concentration gradients drive diffusion, but calculations indicate that diffusion does not decrease the Br/Cl ratio. Some Cl may be leached from the ash, but insufficient amounts are available to cause the observed decrease in Br/Cl ratio. The limited source of Cl suggests that proportionately more Br than Cl is lost from the fluids to the diagenetic solids. Similar nonconservative behavior of Cl and Br may occur during fluid circulation at ridge crests and flanks, thereby influencing the halide distribution in the crust. 3. Determination and Characterization of Volcaniclastic Sediments

Four sites (953−956) were drilled north and south of Gran Canaria during Leg 157. The penetrated pelagic and volcaniclastic sediments can be identified by their different chemical compositions. This paper focuses on the volcaniclastic deposits that were logged in Holes 953C, 955A, and 956B. The sediments in these holes are mainly composed of hemipelagic, fine-grained nannofossil oozes with inte...

Biological control of Cl/Br and low sulfate concentration in a 3.5-Gyr-old seawater from North Pole, Western Australia

The concentration of halogens (Cl, Br) and sulfate in seawater during the Archaean eon have important implications for the evolution of Earth’s hydrosphere and atmosphere and the development of early life. Insights into the composition of Archaean seawater and hydrothermal fluids can be obtained by direct analysis of fluid inclusions preserved in Archaean sediments and hydrothermal systems. Her...

Stable Chlorine Isotope Reservoirs in Chondrites

Introduction: By analyzing the stable Cl-isotopes of halite from the Zag H-breccia and comparing the results with those from other chondritic materials we can provide new information about isotopes in the early Solar System. In particular Cl-isotope work may complement O-isotope studies. We show for the first time that substantial Cl/Cl fractionation exists between chondrite components. Zag hal...

Hydrothermal sediment alteration at a seafloor vent field: Grimsey Graben, Tjörnes Fracture Zone, north of Iceland

[1] An active seafloor hydrothermal system subjects the background sediments of the Grimsey Graben (Tjörnes Fracture Zone) to alteration that produces dissolution of the primary volcaniclastic matrix and replacement/precipitation of sulfides, sulfates, oxides, oxyhydroxides, carbonates and phyllosilicates. Three types of hydrothermal alteration of the sediment are defined on the basis of the do...

Iodine isotope ratios and halide concentrations in fluids of the Satsuma-Iwojima volcano, Japan

Fumarolic condensates and acid spring waters from Satsuma-Iwojima were sampled between 1993 and 1998 and analyzed for 129I/I and 36Cl/Cl ratios and chloride, bromine, and iodine concentrations. Halogen concentrations suggest that the fumarolic condensates represent mostly magmatic fluids, but that the hot springs are a mixture between magmatic fluids and meteoric water with some presence of sea...
